Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (CA)
My practice is a living, evolving symbiosis of theory and heart. I believe each of us are on a unique path that is rich in potential and inevitably involves stumbling blocks. I have love for each of my clients- I see their deepest aspirations and their joys and sorrows. The only appropriate response to this glimpse into another person’s heart is love. It is an honor to stand side by side with my clients, surveying the landscape of their lives.
I see my role as a companion on your path. Together, we will investigate the stumbling blocks that emerge and decode their meanings, their purposes in propelling you further on your journey. We will also explore your aspirations and identify ways you can more fully embody your ideal image of yourself.
I see the therapy journey as a healing of one’s relationship with oneself- with counterproductive ancestral and childhood patterns that are often our largest stumbling blocks. Great transformation is possible for each of us: with intention and effort, we can liberate that golden, radiant potential that lies within us.
Some of the stumbling blocks I have the most experience working with are:
Embracing an LGBTQI identity
Surviving sexual abuse
Family of origin difficulties
Sex and love addiction
Some of the interventions I find helpful, depending on the client and the nature of the symptoms, are:
Cognitive-behavioral therapy techniques
WORKING WITH ME:
I offer private-pay psychotherapy sessions to anyone in California here, through the secure internet platform of WeCounsel.com. My in-person office in Arcata is just 2 blocks from the plaza.
I charge $120 per 60 minute session. I accept private pay clients, and do not bill insurance companies. I am able to provide a receipt if you wish to seek reimbursement for out-of-network care from your insurance provider.
You are welcome to message me here on WeCounsel or on this website in order to initiate working together, whether you would like to do it online or in-person. From there, we will schedule a phone call to talk more about working together.
I earned my master’s degree in clinical psychology in 2011 from Antioch University, Los Angeles. During graduate school, I sought out specific training in LGBTQI-affirmative approaches.
I also worked for one year before graduation at Kaiser Permanente Addiction Medicine at the Sunset Boulevard campus in Los Angeles. In that capacity, I worked with teens and adults in early recovery, both 1-on-1 and in groups. I also worked with relatives of those patients in a codependent support group. At this time, I also studied sex and love addiction and gained an understanding of the 12-step and Refuge Recovery models of recovery.
After graduation I worked for two and half years in rural public mental health in Trinity County, in the mountains of far Northern California. In that capacity, I worked with clients ranging from four years to over sixty years old, with a broad range of mental illness challenges. I saw couples, families, children, teens, adults, and elders. I gained more experience working with issues of chronic illness and addiction. I facilitated several ongoing groups: a Dialectical Behavior Therapy group, a mindfulness group for elementary-aged boys, a women’s group, a men’s group, a mindfulness for anxiety group.
Alongside my formal psychology training, I have studied eastern psychology and philosophy, as a lifelong student of yoga and in the Theravadan Thai Forest and Vietnamese Zen traditions. This study includes attending and staffing many meditation retreats, notable among them being the 21-day retreat in Plum Village, France, in June of 2014, taught by Thich Nhat Hanh, on the topic of “What Happens When We Die?”
In 2015 I earned my marriage and family therapy license for the state of California, and I have had an online private practice since then. I also have had an in-person office space in Humboldt County since March of 2018.
